fragments of a future is a response to Karen Brodine’s poem June, 78. In the poem, Brodine begins with embodiment to critique her experience living as a working class lesbian in 1978 San Francisco. June, 78 ends with the speculation of a future, one in which we and our communities are well. Through our senses, Brodine prompts readers to envision what such a future would feel like today: What would we think? What kind of work would we make if it was work that we loved? What would our environment, where we live and breath, feel like if it were made in harmony with us? These aren't abstract questions, but ones we need to ask ourselves every day as we experience our conditions; questions that can politicize. With this as source material, I worked by hand to layer and arrange each cutout into a large-scale poster. I recorded this and added a voiceover, the documentation becoming a performance of the poem. The mode of making becomes its content: an accumulation of fragments to construct something new.
